Preston Dawson as P’Kasso

A message from Presto “P’Kasso” Dawson:
“My name is Preston “P’Kasso” Dawson. I am a freelance photographer that is working hard to make a name for myself in the photo world, or just the world period. I picked up the camera in 2005 with a mission to learn how to take some marketing shots that I wanted for a clothing line that I dreamed of putting together. But that mission led to the discovery of a new passion, and later the recognition of a God given gift for cameras. With many thousands of dollars spent I’m still on a mission to conquer the world, explore, and understand this gift given to me.”

Hello Ms. Nyna here! I had the pleasure of interviewing P’Kasso, so please enjoy …

Ms Nyna: When did you start as a photographer?

P”Kasso: My first paid shoot was October of 2006, so I say that’s when I first started being a “photographer,” even though it is still hard for me to accept that title sometimes and the perceptions that come with it. I first picked up a SLR camera in spring of 2005.

Ms Nyna: What other talents do you have?

P’Kasso: Other talents? Cars are my first love. I don’t know if that’s a talent, but I have been told I have a knack and vision for automobiles. I also like to produce music as well when I have free time. I grew up playing competitive basketball, bowling, and golf on a local and regional level. Yes I said golf and bowling. Ha ha.

Ms Nyna: What do you have more fun doing?

P’Kasso: Oh man, ummmmm. I would have to say right now music, because it’s an outlet I have not conquered, yet it’s not a business and I just love music. I love what you can do to an instrument that can evoke emotion when heard. I also love that technology has taken that to a new level. And the more I play with music, the more I can appreciate good music and the minds and creativity that put it together. Music is a big inspiration behind my photography. I swear theres a soundtrack playing in my head to all my pictures while I’m shooting or editing. Ha ha.

Ms Nyna: What is your main goal?

P’Kasso: My main goal is to break stereotypes and boundaries. Where I come from (Inglewood, CA) you grow up either playing sports, gang banging, or just being happy to get by. Very few could afford a camera in the 90’s, yet alone understand fashion, commercial photography, etc. And if we did … we didn’t think it was for people like us (the urban community). I just want to show people you don’t have to limit your dreams based on the environment you grew up in. And if you change your environment, you never have to be ashamed of where you come from, or to go back there and let people know its ok to expand your boundaries. Your creativity is an extension of your soul. It’s not always based on how you dress, your friends, your neighborhood, or what others think it should be.

Ms Nyna: What can the people expect from you?

P’Kasso: People can expect me to take things to a new level. When my style or work is put in a category, or a box, thats when I get motived to play a little game of “catch me if you can.” It’s hard to put a something in a BOX that you can’t catch, or that is always moving or evolving. People can also expect a real person. I’m not into the hype of being a photographer. Hahaha. I’m just a young dude that likes to make cool looking pictures and tries to impress myself each time, which is very, very hard. I’m my biggest hater. Lol.

Ms Nyna: Where can we find you and your work?

P’Kasso: You can find me on the block! No just kidding, you can actually find me on Twitter! I swear that thing has consumed my life. Not a good thing! You can find my work at pkassophotography.com, myspace.com/pvision, modelmayhem.com/pkasso, premiumplusmagazine.com, premiumplusmagazine.com/preston (blog), pworldwide.wordpress.com, and I think thats all. Sheesh! I hope my work can show the world through my eyes and all my influences. From music, to the hood, to the suburbs, other cultures, countries, and the shock factor of breaking stereotypes and challenging boundaries. Not just technically, but also socially, and that you can be diverse and still be true to your roots.
