Live Performances @ Chronic Cantina – Costa Mesa, CA.

When you see posts that say Anita and Lainie that means we both are writing our perspective on something we have reviewed. I (Lainie) am going to start this one off! So … The Chronic Cantina is a bar located on the second story of Triangle Square in Costa Mesa. It’s right behind the Yard House and next door to the famous OC hot spot Sutra. If you are looking for a good time, with live music, a fun mixed crowd, and you don’t feel like getting all dressed up, you should go on over to the Chronic Cantina. FYI they don’t have performances every night. Anita and I …

went to go peep the live performances, have a drink (or two), and hang out. Our boy El invited us out to come review his band. Ca$his was the headliner this night August 28, 2008. My ankle is still injured. I am now in a walking cast … so what better place to sit than a spot next to the stage right? Anita was my legs for the night (lol), so she went to the bar for us and got our drinks. We ran into some people (NextDoor and Mayne T.R.I.P.). They recognized us from Hellavaistic! We took a seat with them and sat back and waited to see some undiscovered talent. In the pic its Anita, NextDoor, me (Lainie), Sonny Kapone, and Mayne T.R.I.P.

When the show finally started up first was Roc, a Latino rapper that did a remix to “Dangerous” by Akon and Kardinal Offishall. I did some investigating and could not find anything with Roc’s affiliation to Akon or Kardinal, so I am not sure about that one. I also searched him out on Myspace but still didn’t find any info on him. What he did was like a few lines over Kardinal’s rap. I felt he was just doing an interpretation of it. I was not impressed. Here is a picture of him below. He did a few more songs too.

I really enjoy something new and different, so I was looking forward to seeing Ether perform. With his hat and shades I really couldn’t tell what the heck he looked like cause he was all covered up LOL! I did a Myspace music page search and could not locate him either. Maybe his name isn’t spelled the way I think it is. What I remember about his performance though was that he was yelling, “represent my people coming out of the west” over and over. His beats were a lil boring to me though … I heard it before. Sorry Ether but you got the image down now just get some banging beats to back you up. Below is a picture of Ether. I am now going to pass the post over to Anita.

Hey yall! Anita here! So I see Lainie was tellin yall about Roc. Yeah he did do a song remix over Akon and Kardinal Offishalls song “Dangerous,” but I LOVE that song, so I was feeling it! LOL! I have to admit that even though I was feeling it, I was thinking UM? LOL! Only because I know originally it is not his song. Oh well! Heh! He did a few other songs after that. I couldn’t tell you what he was saying, but I liked the beats. The sound system was not the best. He had some girl (a big girl) come up on stage and shake her ass. She was working it though and I thought she was cute. Then some other girl got up there (no she wasnt big), and she was dancing too. There was a video camera filimg. I guess it was his crew. Perhaps they were making a music video or something. Here is another pic with Roc in it, but also the 2 girls.

It was REALLY packed here, so for me it was a bit chaotic. We ran into so many people! I ran into my good friend Lisa. We used to kick it practically every day way back when. We also ran into (as Lainie said) a couple people who recognized us from Hellavaistic. For those who may not know, Hellavaistic (originated and owned by Lainie) is a company. For awhile there were five of us females running it, but due to creative differences we parted ways. Lainie and I then created the very new and exciting Socially It. One of the guys who recognized us (artist NextDoor) also works for and reps Sober X. Along with him was artist Mayne T.R.I.P. (who I actually know from back in the day), and along with those two was Sonny Kapone (who is Ca$his’s little brother). Ca$his is a rapper and he was headlining this night.

I do not want to sound too repetitive from Lainie’s post so let me tell yall who else performed. There was a group called So Active Ent, a group called The Renegades, and another group called Boss Life. They were all pretty good (the beats), but I really liked Boss Life. Like I said the night was chaoitc, and the place packed, so this review is not the greatest as far as giving more details on all the artists. Here is a picture of Boss Life!

There was an artists there named Epademik. He did not perform, but I must give him props for his hustle. Out of all the artist there he passed out his CD. I mean if other artists were passing out CD’s I sure did not see them or get one. When I left the bar I popped in Epademik’s CD for the ride home. I LOVE IT! I would totally go and see him perform again. He may have a big show coming up at the end of this month (September). I found him on Myspace too! I wrote him a note and he wrote me back. If he remains cool like he is now, I think he will go far.

So, Our boy El and his group Half Past 10 were not able to perform. When they got on stage there were some technical difficulties and their set was not able to start so they got down. We were looking forward to seeing them perform. Half Past 10, however is performing @ Malones in Santa Ana. The address is 604 East Dyer Rd Santa Ana, CA 92705. It’s right off the 55 fwy and Dyer Rd (for all u OC peeps). El of Half Past 10’s Myspace page is www.myspace.com/eltheself. Go check out their music.

NextDoor, Mayne T.R.I.P. and Sonny Kapone are all solo artists. NextDoor is releasing his “Not Your Average Neighbor” Vol. 1 project this week. Mayne and Sonny have a mixed tape coming out called “Mayne and Sonny Present: West Neva Left.” NextDoor has a couple of tracks on their mixed tape so that is why they were all going to perform together at Chronic Cantina. They too were not able to perform because a couple of microphones were stolen after a previous performance. All three artists will be performing September 6, 2008 @ The Blue Cafe in Huntington Beach. The address there is 17208 Pacific Coast Hwy Huntington Beach, CA 92649. NextDoor’s music page is www.myspace.com/nextdoor714 … Mayne T.R.I.P.’s Myspace is www.myspace.com/maynetrip and Sonny Kapone can be found at www.myspace.com/sonnykapone.

Last but not least Ca$his performed. Like I said earlier he was the headliner for the night. He is signed to Shady Records. I ended up leaving during his performance. I felt that if I was going to review this artists, that I should be able to see him fully. There were like 50 dudes on stage with him and 2 of them were standing in front of him. I just could not understand why if he was the headliner, why he wasn’t front and center the whole time. A few times he came to the front for a second, but other than that his boy Kadillac aka Kaz was front and center rappin on the mic. There was some other dude with out a mic and corn rolls all up in the front jumpin around. He is like Latino (maybe Puertorican)??

The one with the mic and his shirt off is Kaz ( aka Kadillac … who is part of the Bogish Boy Crew). Right next to him bending over with the black tank top on (corn rolls) is the dude I mentioned who was up front jumpin and dancin around. Right above him (who’s head u see) … he is facing Kaz, well that is Ca$his.

So that pretty much sums up the night. We met a lot of really cool people. The bar is a cool little spot. I want to go there again to just hang out and maybe dance, Holla!

  1. WASSUPPERS! Yeah i was there with the homie’s Arkane, Supreme Line, Rikanatti & Cashis. It was a crazy evening for sure. I too was surprised to see nobody passing out cd’s. C’mon people flyers just dont cut it no more! Step ya game up!! Good lookin on the shout out ladies and next time say wassup to me. I just want to know why is it every time a hip hop show happens at Chronic Cantina they never turn on all the speaker and bump them? All those people paid 10 bucks to see Cashis perform and the sound was complete shit and then they kept cutting the mics off. Fuck you very much Chronic Cantina! Just speaking my mind.
    Peace.
